world's most expensive dessert

A Sri Lankan resort is charging $14,500 for what it calls the world's most expensive dessert, a fruit-infused confection complete with a chocolate sculpture and a gigantic gemstone.

"The Fortress Stilt Fisherman Indulgence" was created to give visitors at The Fortress resort in the coastal city of Galle a one-of-a-kind experience, said the hotel's public relations manager, Shalini Perera.

The dessert is a gold leaf Italian cheesecake flavored with Irish cream, served with a mango and pomegranate compote and a foamy champagne sauce. It's also decorated with a chocolate carving of a fisherman clinging to a stilt — an age-old local fishing practice — and an 80-carat aquamarine stone.

The dessert has to be specially ordered, Perera said. Though the hotel has received calls about it from as far away as Japan, she said, no one has yet forked over the money to try it.

Different kinds:
Unsweetened: Also called "baking" or "bitter," this is the purest chocolate you can get, with nothing added.

Bittersweet: Has sugar, lecithin , and vanilla.

Semisweet: Contains the same additives as its bittersweet , semisweet chocolate has a little more sugar (but less fat).

Milk:Dry milk is added to sweetened chocolate creates the basis of so many of your favorite candy bars.

White: Isn't true chocolate because it contains no chocolate liquor.

Storage tips:
Chocolate should be tightly wrapped and kept in a cool (60 to 70 degrees farenheit), dry place (not your refrigerator). Dark chocolate can last up to 10 years. Milk and white chocolate will keep for about nine months.

Chocolate Toffee Cake

Ingredients
1 German Chocolate cake mix

1 can condensed milk

1 (8 oz.) container hot fudge sauce

1 (8 oz.) container Cool Whip, thawed

2 large Heath bars

Prepare cake mix per package instructions for a 9- by 13-inch cake.
Using a wooden spoon, poke holes through the top of the cake. Pour the condensed milk over the top. Heat hot fudge sauce, and pour it over the top of the cake. Cool 10 minutes, then frost with Cool Whip. Crush the two large Heath bars and sprinkle over the top.

Ingredients

1 1/2 C. sifted cake flour

1/4 C. granulated sugar

1/2 tsp. baking powder

1/2 tsp. salt

1/2 C. semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/4 C. soft shortening

1 egg, beaten

granulated sugar

1/2 C. chopped pecans

Sift together first four ingredients. In double-boiler, combine chocolate, shortening, and pecans. Heat over hot water until chocolate is melted. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Add egg, and mix thoroughly. Add flour mixture. Shape dough on waxed paper; wrap and refrigerate several hours. At baking time, slice dough 1/8-inch thick; place on ungreased cookie sheet. Sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 10 minutes. Cool before removing from cookie sheet. Yield: 2 1/2 dozen.

Chocolate loving volunteers wanted

British researchers are recruiting volunteers willing to eat a bar of chocolate daily for a year, guilt-free and all in the name of science.

The trial starting in June will explore whether compounds called flavonoids found in chocolate and other foods can reduce the risk of heart disease for menopausal women with type 2 diabetes, the researchers at the University of East Anglia, said .

The goal of the study?

"We hope there will be an additional benefit from dietary intervention in addition to the women's drug therapy."

Previous studies have suggested dark chocolate is rich in the beneficial compounds linked with heart health but experts note the high sugar and fat content of most commercially available chocolate might cancel out some of the advantages.
A host of other research has also shown dark chocolate appears to lower blood pressure, improve the function of blood vessels and reduce the risk of heart attack.


Half the women in the year-long study will eat a super-charged chocolate bar containing 30 grams of flavonoids found in soy, cocoa and other fruits and vegetables. The others will get chocolate without the active compounds.

The researchers hope the study could have implications for the wider population if results show significant benefits from the isoflavones contained in soy and epicatechin found in cocoa.
